There have been 26 incarnations of the 'Stars and Stripes' since December 3, 1775, each with differing numbers of stars and stripes. Today's version has been in use since Independence Day 1960, and consists of 13 horizontal stripes that represent the thirteen colonies that declared independence to be come the first states of the Union, and 50 stars represent each of the 50 current states of the USA.

The United States Flag is also known as 'Old Glory" and the 'Star Spangeld Banner.'
