Following Nelson Mandela's release from prison in 1990, a new national South African flag was commissioned. The black, green, and yellow were taken from the banner of Mandela's African Congress, while red, white, and blue were taken from the old flag of Transvaal. The Y shape is said to reference the convergence of cultures in the nation.

At the time of its adoption in 1994, the South African flag was the only national flag to include six colors and without a seal or brocade.
